Pathway could run the length of East Hampshire

A study to see if a pathway can be built along the spine of East Hampshire has been launched.
If constructed the route would connect tourist attractions and train stations and provide easy off-road access across the district for commuters, leisure cyclists, walkers, horse-riders and disabled users.
The feasibility study, funded jointly by Hampshire County Council and East Hampshire District Council, will find out how much work is needed to complete the path, to be called Shipwright's Way.
East Hampshire District Council's Cabinet agreed the funding for the study in September and aims for it to be completed by Christmas 2009.
Cllr Ken Carter, Portfolio Holder for Sustainable Country Towns, said: "The path has been an aspiration of the Forestry Commission for many years and that aim is now fully supported by East Hampshire District Council, Hampshire County Council, Sustrans and the CTC.
"This multi-user path will help people travel to work or school in a healthy and environmentally sustainable way. It will also attract tourists to the area, which will in turn create demand for overnight accommodation and bring money into the local economy."
The intended path, which forms part of a larger route linking London to Portsmouth, will connect attractions such as Alice Holt Forest, Birdworld and Queen Elizabeth Country Park as well as train stations in Bentley, Liphook, Liss, Petersfield and Rowlands Castle.
The project was initiated by the Hampshire Action Team for East Hampshire and is being led jointly by HCC and EHDC, although it is hoped that in time the project can be incorporated within the Local Strategic Partnership.
Cllr Mark Kemp-Gee, Acting Chairman of Hampshire Action Team for East Hampshire, said: "This is a very exciting project which will benefit hundreds of local residents and tourists alike. I am delighted that the feasibility study has been agreed and I look forward to seeing the results."
