Walking 2 Health hits East Meon
June 2008
Walking 2 Health comes to East Meon
Residents of East Meon are soon to benefit from the popular and successful Walking to Health initiative starting in the village.
Walking to Health aims to provide short, safe, sociable and free walks to local people right on their doorstep. Walking to Health in East Hampshire is part of the national Walking the way to Health Initiative (www.whi.org.uk) which supports over 525 local walking schemes, the East Hampshire scheme being just one of those. Residents of Alton, Headley, Liss, Liphook, and Rowlands Castle are already improving their health and wellbeing by getting out into their local countryside and increasing their physical activity levels.
All Walks to Health are run by dedicated volunteer walk leaders who are supported by Liz Murray, Active Lifestyles Coordinator at East Hampshire District Council.
Volunteers are urgently needed to help develop and lead this new Walk to Health in East Meon. A free information and training day is being held on Tuesday 17th June at the Church on the Green in Rowlands Castle for people to attend to find out more.
Councillor Mrs Jennifer Gray, Community and Health Portfolio Holder for East Hampshire District Council said “I am very pleased that the Walking to Health scheme is now beginning to develop in more rural villages. The walks have brought such benefit to those who have volunteered to lead the walks as well as those who attend walks on a regular basis throughout the District. I am extremely confident that the development of an East Meon Walk to Health will experience the same success and provide local residents with a new physical activity and volunteering opportunity in the village. I would urge everyone interested to get in touch and come along to the information and training day on the 17th June.”
For more information about Walking to Health and the development of a walk in East Meon or if you would like to volunteer to get involved in the development of the walk please contact Liz Murray at East Hampshire District Council on 01730 234067 or liz.murray@easthants.gov.uk.
The information and training day on Tuesday 17th June is free of charge but places need to be booked in advance. Please contact Liz to book a place.
