MS Group urges you to keep exercising!
A support group for Multiple Sclerosis sufferers has emphasised the value of exercise for those battling the disease.
The Alton and Petersfield MS Society, a friendly group offering support and advice to sufferers, their families and friends, runs regular chairobics classes for its members.
The classes are open to anyone with impaired mobility who would like some gentle exercise while having light-hearted fun, not just MS sufferers.
EHDC’s Active Lifestyle Co-ordinator, Louise Christie, who met with the group recently, said: “It is so important to keep active otherwise things seize up, physical activity is a definite bonus for MS sufferers and helps both physically and mentally, giving a good boost of endorphins as well as the feel good factor!”
The group is run by chairman Bernie Green, (52) and vice chairman Angie Alexander. Bernie was diagnosed in 1990 at the age of just 30 years old, while Angie (59) has been a member of the group since 2008.
Bernie said: “If you think that no one understands, we can assure you that we do. We have both been on a long and emotional journey, but are still happy and smiling. We understand the grieving process that sufferers go through. You do not need to feel alone if you don’t want to, come along and meet us, we’re very welcoming.”
The classes are run in both Alton and Petersfield, on alternate weeks. The Alton class runs at the Maltings Centre every other Tuesday between 11am – 1pm. The Petersfield class takes place at The Taro Leisure Centre on alternate Wednesdays between 12 and 2pm.
The MS Society runs social activities and outings and also provides access to local MS Nurses and specialist Occupational Therapists.
