Local health walk scheme launches new walk in Whitehill Bordon

Local health walk scheme launches new walk in Whitehill Bordon

Flourishing East Hampshire Walking for Health scheme is expanding again and is just about to launch a new weekly walk in Whitehill Bordon.

East Hampshire District Council runs a programme of health walks aimed mainly at people who currently take little or no exercise. It is part of the national Walking for Health initiative and offers led walks for beginners and improvers.

The new walk will take place every Monday from 19 September and starts from The Woodlark Pub Car Park, Petersfield Road, Whitehill, Bordon, GU35 9AH at 10.30am. It will last for approximately one hour will be followed by refreshments.

Louise Christie, Walking for Health Scheme Co-ordinator for East Hampshire District Council, says: “I have been involved with the Walking for Health initiative for the last two years and believe it to be one of the best physical activity programmes I have worked with, and it’s free to attend!

“Walking for Health is a national scheme which was first established in 2000 by Dr William Bird. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and Volunteer Walk Leaders and their walkers are now part of the one of the fastest growing physical activity programmes in the UK!

“We are very lucky to have two dedicated local volunteers, Sue Baxter and Carol Dann, who can’t wait to get started and are really looking forward to helping local people gain their confidence as they become fitter and healthier.”

Carol Dann said: “We want people who want to get fit but don’t know where to start to come and join us, and they can make new friends at the same time. We will motivate the walkers and make sure that we walk at the right pace for everyone. One of us will be at the back of the group, and the other at the front, so no one will get lost or left behind, and those that want to go at a slower pace won’t feel under pressure to keep up with those who are faster. It’s all about being part of a team!

“We are also looking forward to the socialising we plan to do after the walk. The Woodlark Pub will be the ideal place to have refreshments afterwards and they have made us very welcome.”

The EHDC scheme welcomes new walkers throughout the year. It currently has 14 regular walks, starting from a variety of locations around the district. For more information contact the Scheme Co-ordinator, Louise Christie, on 01730 234067 or email louise.christie@easthants.gov.uk.
