New Walking for Health Group starts in Four Marks

New Walking for Health Group starts in Four Marks

Four Marks residents will be able to get fit and enjoy the local countryside with a brand new Walking for Health group soon to start in the village.

The new walk, due to begin on Friday 3 June, has been launched by five Four Marks residents who recently attended a training day run by East Hampshire District Council and Winchester City Council.

Louise Christie, the scheme co-ordinator at EHDC, is excited about the new weekly walk, “I have been involved with the Walking for Health initiative for the last two years and believe it to be one of the best physical activity programmes I have worked with, and it’s free to attend! Four Marks has five leaders already qualified, which is excellent, and what’s more there are others who are interested in attending the next course this autumn.

Walking for Health is a national scheme which was first established in 2000 by Dr William Bird. Since then it has gone from strength to strength and Volunteer Walk Leaders and their walkers are now part of the fastest growing physical activity programme in the world!”

Celia Cheasley, one of the locally trained walk leaders said “We are very keen to get a walk going in Four Marks and as one of the other leaders, Frauke Golding and myself, are involved in promoting the use of the Sports Pavilion, it made sense to start a group from there. We are lucky to have three other enthusiastic local leaders, Sue Paton, Wendy and Roger Godber, and we will all take it in turns to lead the walks.

We are very keen to welcome walkers of all abilities, especially beginners, onto our walks.  Please come and join us on any Friday morning for a walk, you will be most welcome.

We are also looking to recruit other people who would like to train as Volunteer Walk Leaders so please let us know if you are interested. The next training course will run at EHDC in the autumn.”

The first walk takes place on Friday 3 June from the Sports Pavilion, Recreation Ground, off Brislands Lane, Four Marks GU34 5AF, begins at 10.30am and will run every Friday thereafter.

For further information call local Walk Leader Celia Cheasley on 01420 563299 or Louise at EHDC on 01730 234067.
