Hockey Level One Coaching Course Fareham May 2011
Level One Certificate in coaching hockey
This is a Coaching Assistant Award, delivered in partnership with 1st4sport Qualifications (Awarding Body), giving an externally accredited qualification that sits on the National Qualifications Framework.
It is the minimum qualification for those who assist with hockey coaching sessions and is intended to provide the essential skills and knowledge necessary to assist a more qualified coach to run a safe and enjoyable session.
The candidate can expect the tutor to introduce:
- Basic core skills
- Principles of play
- Use of small-sided games
- The rules of the game
- Underpinning theory knowledge
- Skills to create a safe, enjoyable and effective environment
A formal assessment is included within the course and the candidate will be informed, at the end of the course, if they have been assessed as competent against the performance criteria.
Candidates who are assessed as ‘not competent’ will receive an action plan to work to prior to reassessment, which must take place within 12 months of the course start date. Reassessment will incur further costs of £15 plus assessor’s mileage.
Those licensed at Level One will be entitled to coach under the supervision of a more qualified and experienced coach (e.g. Level Two). They should only coach those skills that they are qualified to coach. The Level One is a Coaching Assistant Award to comply with UK Coaching Certificate requirements. More advanced skills require additional training to ensure safe and effective coaching.
It is appropriate for Level One Coaching Assistants to be working with juniors, school teams, lower level club teams and within the Single System Junior Development Centres.
PRE-COURSE WORK
All candidates are required to complete the online ‘safeguarding and protecting young people in hockey course’ prior to attendance on the course. The cost of this is £9.18 and is additional to the course fee. Information will be forwarded on acceptance of your application.
The only exemption to completion of the pre-course work is if you have completed a sportscoachUK ‘Safeguarding & Protecting Children in Sport’ Workshop within the last 3 years (or an equivalent course provided by the Football Association, British Gymnastics or the Rugby Football Union). The attendance certificate will need to be produced on the first day of the course.
CANDIDATES
The course is suitable for those with some experience of playing hockey and, perhaps, of helping in a coaching or teaching environment e.g. Community Sports Coaches.
The minimum age for attendance is 16 years (it is recommended that candidates who are under 18 years of age attend a Leadership Course first). Applications from candidates under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a letter of support from their teacher or an accredited hockey coach. (This letter must include details of coaching experience, attitude and commitment, as they will be required to participate in reciprocal coaching during the course).
