Families cycle to school in Petersfield

Families can learn how to cycle safely together with a course being offered by the CTC .

“Petersfield families are keen to cycle to school but often find that their fear of other road users makes them think twice,” says Sarah Walker, local CTC Cycle Development Officer.

Cycling or walking encourages children to adopt a healthy lifestyle, especially when parents provide good role models, and Sarah has been approached to work with a number of families to develop their confidence and ability to ride safely together on the roads.

Parents can now receiving training to update their knowledge of how to cycle safely and are then encouraged to work with their children to pass on the skills they have learnt.

Sarah is also very keen to draw the attention of local road users to the needs of cycling families. She said: “While it is important that cyclists do what they can to cycle sensibly, it is also important that other road users show sensitivity towards them, giving them space on the road, passing by at a slower speed and offering encouragement by smiling and being patient.

What all these families want is to make the roads a more pleasant place to be so that they can be active and enjoy riding their bikes. If I can play a small part in making this happen, I feel that my job is worthwhile.”

Sarah will be running training sessions for parents at Petersfield Infants School and can be contacted on 07775 595998 or at sarah.walker@ctc.org.uk . Her work is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
