London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics

Taking place in London in 2012, it represents a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for residents to be involved in, and witness first hand this truly momentous global occasion.

The Olympic Games start with an opening ceremony that takes place on 27 July and ends with a closing ceremony on 12 August. In between there will be 17 days of competition with 26 different sports taking place across 34 venues.

There will be around 2 million tickets for the Paralympics Games which features 20 sports taking place over 11 days of competition in 21 venues. These Games open with a ceremony that takes place on 28 August and closes on 09 September.

East Hampshire 2012 has been produced by East Hampshire District Council and the Get Active Partnership to make the most out of opportunities arising from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games.

The London 2012 Olympics present the district of East Hampshire with a fantastic opportunity to grow, and ultimately prosper from the legacies that will be left by the Games.

Olympics 2012

Whether its sporting facilities being enjoyed by diverse and inclusive East Hampshire communities, helping East Hampshire businesses grow or making our borough more active - East Hampshire 2012 will be there to make this happen.

East Hampshire 2012 is about enabling and enthusing action. We want partners to use the new East Hampshire 2012 brand to promote London 2012 related work anywhere in the district. It is intended that all of the information will be drawn together to promote and support ‘2012 themed’ initiatives via our website and through partners such as Perrins School Sports Partnership, DC Leisure, local community clubs and groups, Alton & District Sports Council and the Get Active Partnership.

Our key objectives are to:
• increase participation in sport and physical activity and to encourage people to lead healthier lives.
• inspire people of all ages and communities to volunteer before, during and after the Games.
• help people take part in local cultural events as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
• strengthen a sense of belonging through community events and especially reach out to young people
• act as a catalyst for achieving progress against local targets and priorities.

Torch Relay
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) have announced that the Olympic Flame will arrive in the UK on Friday 18 May 2012 and will travel around the UK for 70 days; arriving in London the weekend before the 2012 Games begin. It will then travel through all London Boroughs before entering the Olympic stadium during the opening ceremony on 27 July.

In line with the bid promise to inspire and connect a new generation to the Olympic Movement, 8,000 torchbearers will be selected with over half of the places expected to go to young people. There will be a torchbearer nomination process, expected to be announced in May 2011, giving people across the UK the chance to be involved in this historic countdown to the start of the London 2012 Games.

East Hampshire is one of the 55 applications submitted by the various towns, cities, and local communities in the South East to LOCOG to be included in the Torch Relay in 2012. The final route will be announced in November 2011.

Olympic Torch Relay
The Olympic Flame is one of the enduring symbols of the Olympic Games, representing peace, unity and friendship. As it is carried around the UK for the Olympic Torch Relay it will bring the spirit of the Games to everyone.

Lit in Olympia, Greece, in a traditional ceremony, the Olympic Flame will be taken on a short relay in Greece before arriving in the UK on 18 May 2012.

On a 70-day journey across the UK, the Flame will be carried by 8,000 Torchbearers, generating excitement as it makes its way to London and the Opening Ceremony of the Games. The Flame will come within a one-hour journey for 95 per cent of the population of the UK – with entertainment, shows and concerts marking its arrival at each stop.

Carrying the Torch
Carrying the Olympic Flame in the lead up to the Games will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The organisers have promised to use the power of the Games to inspire a new generation, so more than half of the Torchbearers will be young people.

Carrying the Olympic Flame
8,000 inspirational people from around the UK will carry the Olympic Flame as it journeys across the UK. Nominated by someone they know, it will be their moment to shine, inspiring millions of people watching in their community, in the UK and worldwide.

The London 2012 Organising Committee nominations process for Torchbearers has now closed and selection is underway.

You can still make a nomination through LOCOG's presenting partners, please click on any of the links below for further information.

What happens next?
LOCOG will now create a shortlist of potential Torchbearers through a ballot process from all of the nominations that came through the London 2012 process.
The nominees who have been shortlisted will be told by email the week starting 8th August 2011. The person who made the nomination will also receive an email.

The shortlisted nominees will then be put forward to one of 12 judging panels around the UK. The stories will remain anonymous as the judges decide which they think have the power to inspire the world.

In December 2011 LOCOG will let people know whether or not they've been chosen to be one of the 8,000 inspirational Olympic Torchbearers.

Volunteering Opportunities

Games Makers
The 2012 Games are asking for 70,000 volunteers to act as Games Makers for both the Games and the Paralympics.

Schools

How schools can get involved

The first thing to do is register for Get Set the education programme designed by the organisers of the games specifically to enable schools to get involved and engage with the lead up to London 2012.

Registering is only the first step. To get your school really engaged with the programme and to link up with the other schools and share in the good practice of others, schools should be aiming to become part of the Get Set Network, which is a more developed level of involvement. There are more opportunities and teaching materials for schools that are part of the Network.

Join the Get Set Network

The Get Set network is a special community of schools and colleges which are:
Demonstrating a commitment to the Olympic Values (friendship, excellence and respect) and the Paralympic Values (inspiration, determination, courage and equality)

Using the London 2012 Games to inspire learners of all ages to get involved in Values-based projects and activities

Any school or college in the UK can become a member of the Get Set network and receive rewards and recognition from London 2012.

There are different versions of the toolkit depending on what type of school is applying, with specific and relevant case studies and images.
